GENESIS 12-50: First, God
God makes a covenant promise to Abraham. The covenant starts with the heart of God. He wants our lives to matter.
EXODUS: The human race is in trouble
God promises to bring the decendants of Abraham into a land where they will become a nation that will bless the world.
This imperfect family becomes slaves in Egypt. God raises up Moses, defeats evil, and enters into a covenant relationship with the nation of Israel, Abraham’s decendants.
LEVITICUS: A holy God invites his people to live in his presence
“Holy” is the word that sets God apart. Holy means that God is alive in a way that exceeds our experience and imaginiation. God is actually present with us and every detail of our lives is affected.
NUMBERS: Israel rebels against God at every step
Because the Israelites don’t believe God, a journey of a couple of weeks to the promised land, becomes 40 years in the wilderness. But God always remains faithful.
DEUTERONOMY: Moses’ last sermon
A new generation of God’s people is finally ready to move into the promised land. Moses entreats them to choose between obeying God and life, or disobedince and death.
