Praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD from the heavens;
Praise him in the heights above.
Praise him, all his angels;
Praise him all his heavenly hosts.
Praise him, sun and moon;
Praise him, all your shining stars.
Praise him you highest heavens
And you waters above the skies.
Let them praise the name of the LORD,
For at his command they were created.
It’s kind of hard to miss what is uppermost in this writer’s mind. It’s worship! It’s praise. It’s saying, singing, shouting to God: “You are so good!” “You are so brilliant!” “You are so beautiful!”
Having commanded praise from every living creature he can think of “kings and princes,” “wild animals and cattle,” “lightning and hail,” the writer gives three reasons for praising the Living God:
- At his command they were created.
- He alone is exalted. (He has no equal.)
- We are a people “close to His heart.”
We are to praise because of who He is, Creator and Sovereign, but also because of this curious piece: He has chosen to love us. His love for us is so undeserved! His love stands beside these other two unshakeable truths: God created. God has no equal. And, just as certain, God has chosen to love us.
Let’s pray (and praise) this day as the loved daughters and sons He has made us to be.
Praying and praising with you this day.
