As a father has compassion on his children
So the LORD has compassion on
Those who fear him;
For he knows how we are formed,
He remembers that we are dust.
I love that the Psalm writer connects compassion with a dad. It seems most times that quality is attached to moms. The world is a far better place when men and even dads are compassionate.
Last Sunday I led a celebration of life for one of our men. He was hard working and successful and gentle and generous. His son-in-law talked about how he, an aspiring young farmer, would often get his tractor stuck and this man would come and pull him out, day or night. One of his kids had a little girl out of wedlock and this man and his wife raised the child when the mom and dad weren’t able to parent her. That little one was so vulnerable. The little girl, now a woman and mother, stood before the crowd and spoke of him as her hero.
Compassion literally means shared suffering. God enters our suffering with us because he knows it’s too much for us to bear alone. Sounds like Jesus!
This day, as we pray, nestle into this great truth: the One who made us from dust entered our world as one of us to share our suffering to win us for Himself.
Praying with you this day.
