In you, LORD my God,
I put my trust.
I trust in you;
Do not let me be put to shame,
Nor let my enemies triumph over me.
No one who hopes in you
Will ever be put to shame,
But shame will come to those who
Are treacherous without cause
Guilt is when you feel bad about something you’ve done. If you’re found guilty in a court of law, you’re going to jail. Commit the crime, you do the time!
Though Christians still face the consequences of their actions, they do believe that Jesus has swallowed their guilt. “He was pierced for our transgression, he was crushed for our iniquities…”
Shame is a different creature. Guilt leaves you feeling lousy about what you did, but shame makes you feel lousy about who you are. Shame tells you you’re inadequate, or you’re dumber than everyone else, or you’ll never beat that old familiar temptation.
Put your trust in God. Pray about these things. He will show you his ways, he will teach you His paths. He forgives sins. Better still, when you believe, he comes and lives inside you. It’s no longer you who lives but Christ who lives in you.
“My eyes are ever on the LORD,
For only he will release my feet from the snare.”
