How long will you defend the unjust
and show partiality to the wicked?
Defend the weak and the fatherless;
Uphold the cause of the poor and oppressed.
Rescue the weak and needy;
Deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
The ‘gods’ know nothing,
They understand nothing.
They walk about in darkness;
All the foundations of the earth are shaken.
The Psalmist has some choice words for leaders who serve themselves and ignore the hardship of the poor. These leaders fancy themselves ‘gods’, sovereign over the rest of us. They compete with each other and treat human lives like a devalued currency. The foundations of the earth are shaken.
God is not impressed. God has always used his position for the good of those beneath him, not to lord it over us. He expects the same from the women and men he places in positions of authority and leadership.
Let’s pray today for small group leaders, for youth leaders, and church staff by name. Pray for your teacher, boss, or employer. Bless those who lead you. Call out to our Lord on their behalf.
