Does he who fashioned the ear not hear?
Does he who fashioned the eye not see?
Does he who disciplines nations not punish?
Does he who teaches humankind lack knowledge?
The Lord knows all human plans; he knows they are futile.
Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD,
The one you teach from your law.
I would say I was disciplined regularly as a child and deserved every bit of it (and probably more). At no point in my parent’s discipline did I ever think to myself, “I am blessed!” It was more like, “How can I get out of this or make it hurt less?” I remember once being sent to my room and putting on several additional pairs of undies in anticipation of a spanking.
It would take a very mature person to face discipline and feel blessed.
What if we went into prayer today asking,
“LORD if I need to change something,
if I need to repent of something,
if you need to say something to me today, even if it’s painful,
I ask you to put your finger on that place?”
It’s far better to be corrected than to go on doing the same unconscious silliness. God disciplines in kindness because he’s forming us into the shape of the Lord Jesus.
Will you pray that with me today? “Lord Jesus, who sees and hears all, would you bless me today through your discipline?”
Praying with you this day.
