Your statutes are wonderful;
Therefore I obey them.
The unfolding of your words gives light;
It gives understanding to the simple.
I open my mouth and pant
Longing for your commands.
Turn to me and have mercy on me,
As you always do those who love your name.
Direct my footsteps according to your word;
Let no sin rule over me.
Discernment is a regular prayer request in my life.
Which way God?
How do I handle this situation?
What does this person most need?
I am often out of my area of competence. I need Jesus!
I love that the psalmist prayed, “Direct my footsteps…according to your word!” That’s a clue right there, isn’t it? God does speak to us, nudge us, and prod us. Maybe he uses a dream or a conversation, but the major way that God dispenses his discernment is through his Word. That’s why it is so good to daily be in the Book—reading, listening, practicing.
Each of us faces issues this very day that require discernment and direction. You know what to do. Before you race madly off in all directions, get yourself quiet before the One who knows.
Praying and listening with you.
