Sermon Questions Isaiah 53
1. Have you ever had someone take the fall for something you did? What was it like? If not, can you think of a time when this happened to someone you know? What do you think it would have been like?
2. Isaiah 53 talks about a suffering servant. Who do you think is referred to here? (Hint: Isaiah uses the term servant to describe three people or groups of people: 1. Himself, 2. Israel, 3. The coming Messiah).
3. Verse 5 says, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Do you have a hard time or easy time that YOU would be worth this kind of sacrifice?
4. Put yourself in the shoes of a Jewish reader during the time Isaiah was written, how do you think you’d react to this kind of message? These verses speak about promise. Why would they be hopeful to their first readers? Do they give you hope today?
