Sermon Questions: Psalm 90

  1. What does it mean to make your home in God? Have you practiced this in your own life, or can you describe how someone you know has modeled “dwelling in God”?
  2. What analogies does the Psalmist share to describe the timelessness of God? What analogies have been most helpful for you in grasping the “everlasting” nature of God? How could you explain the concept of “forever” or “eternity” to a child or a neighbour?
  3. The Psalms often allude to our own lives as being the equivalent of blades of grass that are withered by the sun and blown away by the wind. Are you discouraged by the brevity of life, or are you relieved that our “toil and trouble” has an end-date? Has your perception of life and death changed in recent years?
  4. Again and again, the Bible teaches us that the pursuit of wisdom must begin with “fearing the Lord” – that is to say: being in awe of his immense power. What helps you to remember to “fear the Lord”? Where and when are you most in awe of God’s power? (If possible, describe a time or a place where you were greatly amazed by our awesome God.)
  5. In verse 13, the Psalmist begs the Lord to return. In fact, for many centuries, Christians have prayed “Maranatha” (or “Come, Lord Jesus, come”). Is this a part of your regular prayers? Explain how you are longing for the day of the Lord, and whether or not the Lord’s approaching return makes you nervous and apprehensive.
  6. In verses 16-17, the Psalmist asks the Lord to reveal his work and begs that our own work would be affirmed and established. How is your own work wedded to what God is doing on Earth? What will you do this week to be a benefit to others and to further God’s kingdom on Earth?
