Prayer Wednesday

You sweep people away in the sleep of death
– they are like the new grass of the morning:
In the morning it springs up new,
But by evening it is dry and withered.

It’s Holy Week. All four biographies of Jesus—Matthew, Mark, Luke and John—slow down for Holy Week. Given that Jesus’ life was likely 33 years in length, it’s amazing that each of the writers use about one-third of their books to talk about the last week of his life. John uses almost half of his book for Holy week.

Holy Week is a good time for Jesus’ people to slow down and ponder … and pray.

Psalm 90 reminds us how fragile and fleeting we are. Even if we make it to 70 or 80, it’s just a drop in the bucket of the God who is from everlasting to everlasting. That’s worth pondering. We’re just grass, bright and green first thing in the morning, wilted by dinner.

Is there anything You will do about this, our God?

Satisfy us in the morning
with your unfailing love,
That we may sing for joy and
Be glad all our days.

I love that Jesus’ resurrection was discovered in the morning! Moses, the author of Psalm 90 had no knowledge of that 1300 years earlier, but there Jesus is, first thing in the morning, our answer to death.

Thanks be to God.

Pondering, praying, and watching for morning with you!

Andrew
