Prayer Wednesday: The Rock

Prayer Wednesday: The Rock

Hear my cry, O God;
Listen to my prayer.
From the ends of the earth I call to you,
I call as my heart grows faint;
Lead me to the rock
That is higher than I.
For you have been my refuge,
A strong tower against the foe.
I long to dwell in your tent forever and
Take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

We have just returned from hiking the Bruce Trail around Tobermory. It’s a cliff’s edge. One of the days as we hiked in a monsoon, the waves crashed into the escarpment, pounding away at the ancient cliffs. Low ground was perilous. It was much safer on higher ground, especially that day.

This prayer-writer (David) was having a monsoon day. He felt like he was far away from everything familiar (“from the ends of the earth”) and he was up against opposition (“the foe”). He chose not to pull the covers over his head or lash out in angry self-defence; rather he chose to pray.

He poured out his heart. LORD I want to be near You. To “dwell in your tent” and nestle in under your wings.

This is beautiful. This is the heart of God and the heart of prayer. We don’t ask that our lives be easy and problem-free. We do ask for the power of the Living God in us and with us as we tackle the stuff of today.

There is a Rock that is higher than us.

Praying (even in the monsoon!) with you today.

Andrew
