Prayer Wednesday

I sought the LORD, and he answered me;
He delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;
Their faces are never covered with shame.
This poor man called and the LORD heard him;
He saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the LORD encamps around
Those who fear him,
And he delivers them.

For real? Is this accurate? We are about to bury a guy who was the prince of his community. The only thing he did wrong was try to keep a snowmobile from hitting a tree. “The LORD saved him out of all his troubles?”

This has to be like Jesus saying: “You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. All men will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. By standing firm, you will gain life” (Luke 21). The person was put to death! How does it work that not a hair on their head will perish?

Can you believe that nothing, not a thing, can happen to you—not even the very worst thing—that our Lord won’t turn to ultimate good? Will you see it at the time? No. Will you cry? Yes. Will you doubt? I do.

Will all of this one day make sense? Even better than just making sense, we will rise up with one voice and say “God, you are good!”

Taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the person who takes refuge in him.

Pray with me from that place today.

Andrew

Psalm 129 is a bit of a nasty Psalm! The writer has been oppressed and doesn’t hold back in expressing what that feels like. You might think being a believer means your troubles disappear, but that has never been the case. The good news is that God is neither blind nor indifferent to our struggles.

Psalm 131 - The Psalms of Ascent have it all: anguish, anger, encouragement, and wild joy. Psalm 131 is all about contentment. Where does contentment come from? What ruins it? What does it feel like? How can I be content in an age where marketing, social media and mirrors breed discontent?

Psalm 133 - The Psalms of Ascent were songs for the journey—worshippers sang them as they travelled together toward Jerusalem and the Temple. These Psalms give voice to the sorts of things that go through worshippers' hearts as they prepare to worship.

Psalm 121 - We humans need help! The question is, where will we turn for it? Psalm 121 invites us to look to God for true help.
