When The King Comes | Does My Life Have Meaning?

Advent 2024

Luke 1:26-38

Mary was approached by the angel Gabriel and told she was the one to carry the “Son of the Most High”. She was curious and submissive, but she didn’t ‘feel the love’ until she walked 150 km to visit her relative Elizabeth. Together, they processed what was going on in their lives. That was the beginning of Christianity! Two believers getting honest and committing themselves to God and each other, no matter what.

  1. Describe a friendship that has been life-giving to you and your faith in Jesus.
  2. Would you say that, like Mary, you are highly favoured by God? Why or why not?
  3. Look at the descriptions of v. 32-33. What does each phrase mean? Why does each one matter so much?
  4. Do you have an Elizabeth (or Mary) in your life who can help you identify and enter into all of what God is doing in your life? If so, what’s that like? If not, how might you position yourself for that?

Colossians 2:13-19 - Humans have a problem that we can’t save ourselves from—not through secular programs or religious systems. The good news of Jesus is that on the cross, Jesus dealt with it all. In him we are alive, forgiven, and free!

Colossians 2:1-7-The way forward for the first Christians wasn't always easy. False teachers brought confusion and deception, prompting Paul to point believers back to the truth. Just as the best way to spot a counterfeit is to know the genuine article, the best way to recognize false teaching is to know Jesus.

Colossians 1:24-29-Suffering is one of life's hardest realities. We might expect that following Jesus would mean less pain, but Jesus himself suffered and made it clear that his followers would too. The good news is that our suffering is never lost on God and is never in vain.
